August Survival Sweeps

It seems like there’s always more survival gear to buy and never enough funds. Sweepstakes offer a way to dream big without spending a fortune.

If you’re new to sweeps, you will have to pay taxes on winnings over a certain amount. Also, be sure to review the fine print to make sure you know the rules of entry. Some will disqualify you if you accidentally enter twice, have requirements for certain states, and so forth. Most of the sweeps listed below are for people living in the US and most don’t expire until the end of the month. I’ve tried to note all of those that allow daily entries. I keep a list of those in a Word file and visit back each morning just in case I get lucky. So far, I personally have only won a couple smaller sweeps, but a good friend of mine is a devoted daily sweeper and wins so often that he sells many of the goodies he wins and banks the cash.

Without further ado, here are this month’s finds. I’ll try to post more each month. Feel free to list any more you find in the comments below!

REVIEW: H.I.R.T. Home Invasion Response Tactics from 2A Tactical Group, LLC

233985856Survival Colony was recently contacted by 2A Tactical Group, LLC and asked if we would do a review of their H.I.R.T. Home Invasion Response Tactics manual, and of course we said ‘yes’. Manuals are a double edged sword for me.  On the one hand I love manuals. Manuals tell you how to do things. Just having a manual makes you smarter, even if you don’t read it. When people see your cache of literature and knowledge they are like, ‘whoa! This cat has it all!’ The other side of this sword is that I am a guy. Guys rarely read manuals, we just collect them. Why? Manuals oppress our natural curiosity and desire to figure things out through trial and error. Manuals tell us what we are doing wrong. Manuals are like pulling over and asking a stranger for directions on a road trip when we have inadvertently decided to take an alternate route. That and manuals are usually a very dry read. Which is why when Jackie asked me to read the H.I.R.T. Home Invasion Response Tactics manual by telling me to read the manual I did the angry zombie stomp over to her and took it from her hand, but I did so like a boss. Continue reading

4 Basic Tools to Protect Yourself from Ebola

The world is in the midst of it’s largest ever Ebola outbreak. The first ever transmisson of Ebola within the United States was just confirmed this week. Two days later there was another confirmed transmission within the US and who knows how many people were infected before they sought treatment for symptoms. As of this writing, the CDC is saying two airline flights were potentially at risk, as would be anyone who came in contact with either nurse in the early symptomatic stages of the disease.

So what do we do? How do we prepare in case the worst happens? Continue reading

Black Friday Sales

Let’s Play A Game

Let’s play a game of “Rock, Paper, Scissors.”  Better yet, let’s play a gamer of “Prepper, Marauder, Zombie.”  First we need to define each of these nouns.

Prepper: Call them a prepper, survivalist, eccentric with a bunch of stockpiled food and ammo, doesn’t matter.  It’s you.  You have spent your time gathering the necessary resources and knowledge that will help you prevail during dire times, whatever those times may be.  You have taken stock and inventory, done the math down to the last calorie; you know what is at stake and how long you can last.  You live by a simple code: Survival of the fittest, not the survival of everyone.  You have your own moral and ethical code that will guide you and your companions during those dark times.  You are a hard target, not one that can be easily taken down.

Marauder: They prey on others through the use of fear and violence.  They take what they want through force and intimidation.  Don’t think of them as the anarchic bike gangs that television and fiction often portray them as, unruly in their pecking order, bowing down to the Lord of the Wastelands.  Some may be of this caliber, others may be organized, disciplined, and operate as a well-oiled machine.  They may use tactics or infiltration and subterfuge to take down their targets.  Initially they will seek out easy prey, but sooner or later that prey will become scarce and they may have to go after something bigger. Chia Challenge Train Up Part 1

It was time to start training.  It was time to put down my beer, turn off the horrible 1974 post-apocalypse movie I was watching, get off of the couch, and begin the work-up for the Chia Challenge.  I knew what I had to do; run the actual Chia Challenge Course.  Yeah, I can do it cold.

It seemed like a good idea at the time.  Most of my ideas seem epic and glorious when I think of them, but usually prove to be impractical or painful when executed (like the time I stuck my hand in the toaster to build up a tolerance to heated surfaces).

I decided to give the Fieldline Tactical Pack another try.  I loaded it up with 32 pounds of gear, laced up my shoes, and hit the road.  Everything seemed great until the 7 mile mark. That is when I began to feel the twinge of a cramp in my right calf.  I attempted to suck it up.  I just kept telling myself that I could make it.  I used a bit of mind over matter and all that motivational stuff.  It seemed to be working but then the cramp got a bit worse.  It was time to self-motivate again.  I just kept asking myself, “What if there were zombies chasing you”?  The cramp answered my question.
